John Benson Chapter

The John Benson Chapter was organized on March 12,
1913, in Hartwell, Georgia. As the county seat of Hart
County, named for Revolutionary War heroine Nancy
Hart, the town has a long history as a center of agriculture
and the textile industry. Tourism is a recent addition
with the development of beautiful Lake Hartwell.
Hartwell is located about 40 miles northeast of Athens.

The name of the chapter honors John Blassingame Benson
(1822-1892), a merchant and community leader and a
descendant of Thomas Benson and John Blassingame,
Revolutionary Soldiers. His forebears came from Virginia.
He died in Hartwell on January 27, 1892.
